Are lip filler and lip enhancement are same thing?

Lip Enhancement

Known as lip injections, lip augmentation, lip fillers and lip enhancement, these terms are all interchangeable. By injecting certain substances into the lips, a skilled surgeon can shape and maintain fuller, more plump lips, sometimes up to six months.

Beauty and Youth

Fuller, plumper lips are often associated with beauty, youth and good health. Some people are born with very thin lips, while others experience thinning as part of the natural aging process. Fortunately, there are several options available to enhance them and help them maintain their youthful appearance.

Each year, thousands of people experience good results with successful lip enhancements. Where once fat injections and implants were the only methods used, these methods proved unreliable with high risk and side effects.  Today’s doctors are opting for natural and synthetic fillers that can keep lips plump for several months. Surgical procedures that include implants are also available for more permanent solutions.

Current Procedures

Thin lip can attribute to a person being self-conscious.  Lip enhancement can help balance the face with fuller lips and help them regain their self-confidence.Looking good is feeling good. Products and techniques are constantly being developed making augmentation both patient-friendly and more effective.

One common procedure is known as Fat Transfer. Surgeons will extract fat from other areas on the body where it can be spared from and either inject or surgically implant it into the lips, usually under general anesthesia. This process is a more permanent solution, lasting far longer than any of the other procedures.

Another process utilizes either Hyaluronic Acid, Restylane or Juvederm; these clear, non-animal gels are  used in the treatment of wrinkles, folds, and lip augmentation. The effects of this procedure can last 6 months, sometimes longer.

Alternatives - Non-Surgical

Some people would prefer non-invasive, non-surgical procedures. Cosmetic companies have developed products called “lip plumpers” that are currently used to make lips look fuller. By irritating the skin of the lips with Capsaicin-type ingredients, these products cause the lips to swell up, creating a temporary appearance of fuller lips.

Also available are some special devices that act as small vacuum pumps and can be used to increase blood pressure to the lips, plumping them up temporarily. This process is arduous and not very popular.

Side Effects and Risks

Choosing your surgeon carefully is important. Unless your surgeon is skilled in the procedures you have chosen, take caution. Complications can range from redness to bleeding, swelling, itching, uneven lips, bruising and lumpiness or ridges, necessitating corrective surgeries to correct the condition. Consult extensively to ensure that you understand the procedure and the risks involved.
